Record oil prices - the price of a barrel of oil reached $145 in 2008 - drove profits at the fourth largest U.S. oil and gas company known for boosting oil production in hard-to-reach reserves. 

Even with a drop in prices, Oxy, Texas's biggest producer, sold oil in 2008 for an average 36% more than the previous year.
