Deviant, aka David Christopher, began playing his tripped-out blend of deep progressive house in 1998 at venues throughout New York City, including Vinyl, Limelight, Roxy, and Cheetah. In 2000, Deviant founded HeadRush Music, a promotions company that pioneered the use of online and e-mail event marketing in New York City. In 2003, following a move to Cleveland, Ohio, and with the addition of partner Amy Dana, HeadRush Music continued its mission to spread progressive music to progressive minds.

In 2004, Deviant and Amy founded Toes in the Sand Recordings, which has grown into one of the world's most respected progressive labels. Toes started off with a bang, with their first release, "Bound for Ascension" by Michael Lanning, appearing on Anthony Pappa's Balance 006. Since then, the label has been committed to exposing the globe's best underground talent, including Siberian Son, Alican & Soner, DJ Tarkan, Andrew K, Naveen G, The Last Atlant, Elusive, Johan Vermeulen, and Pablo Roma.

In 2006, Deviant shifted HeadRush Music's focus from events to a second record label, focusing on edgier, deeper sounds that didn't quite fit on the more melodic Toes in the Sand. The new label features veteran artists like RND( ) and Nick Hogendoorn, as well as up-and-comers like DownKill, Peter Corvaia, and Rob Curtis.

As a DJ, Deviant's late-night sound has been the perfect finish during closing sets for Sean Cusick, Steve Porter, Hybrid, John Howard, Jerry Bonham, Mazi, Randall Jones, Habersham, and Thomas Penton, helping him twice earn the Cleveland Music Award for Best DJ. He has also proven his ability to warm up the dance floor, opening for Sandra Collins, BT, Max Graham, Jondi & Spesh, Tim Skinner, Trendroid, Austin Leeds, Micro, Noel Sanger, Three, Steve Gerrard, John Howard, George Acosta, and Pete Moss. Deviant has also played the headliner role at events in San Francisco, Miami, NYC, Orlando, Louisville, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh, and even spun on Cleveland's FOX Morning Show to promote Paul Van Dyk's Rock the Vote event and HeadRush Music's Get Your Vote Out event with Dennis Kucinich.

In August 2004, Deviant's contributions to the American dance music scene led to an invitation to join the Balance Record Pool, a hand-picked collective of the top 40 North American DJs, including Chris Fortier, Jimmy Van M, Sandra Collins, D:Fuse, and Deepsky.

Following through on HeadRush's commitment to getting underground music to the masses, Deviant actively participates in numerous radio shows around the world. Despite not being a trance DJ, Deviant appeared on SIRIUS Satellite Radio's "The Peak Hour with Victor Dinaire," putting him in the company of past guests like Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten. Deviant has also appeared on ProtonRadio.com, FriskyRadio.com, Galaxie 95.3 FM France, EccentricBeats.com, Rotationz.be, Beatfactor.net, and on FM radio from Argentina to Belgium. Deviant currently hosts the Toes in the Sand radio show on Proton Radio.

Deviant has been creating music since 1992, long before he ever stepped up to a turntable, drawing his influences from across the musical spectrum to create songs (and DJ sets) that defy typical dance-music formulas. His last release, "That Marijuana Track," was the #5 top seller at EDMDigital.com. He also remixed Jairus Miller's "Cobra" for Infamous Light Recordings, Brahma's "Peaks of Destiny" on Toes in the Sand Recordings, and is currently hard at work on other remixes and original tracks.

Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latin: nanos gigantium humeris insidentes) is a Western metaphor meaning "One who develops future intellectual pursuits by understanding the research and works created by notable thinkers of the past"; a contemporary interpretation. However, the metaphor was first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres. It was famously uttered by seventeenth-century scientist Isaac Newton (see below). The picture is derived from the Greek mythology where the blind giant Orion carried his servant Cedalion on his shoulders.

The attribution to Bernard is due to John of Salisbury. In 1159, John wrote in his Metalogicon:^[1]

"Bernard of Chartres used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size."

("Dicebat Bernardus Carnotensis nos esse quasi nanos, gigantium humeris insidentes, ut possimus plura eis et remotiora videre, non utique proprii visus acumine, aut eminentia corporis, sed quia in altum subvenimur et extollimur magnitudine gigantea")

According to medieval historian Richard Southern, Bernard is comparing the modern scholar (12th century) to the ancient scholars of Greece and Rome:^[2]

[The phrase] sums up the quality of the cathedral schools in the history of learning, and indeed characterizes the age which opened withGerbert (950-1003) and Fulbert (960-1028) and closed in the first quarter of the 12th century with Peter Abelard. [The phrase] is not a great claim; neither, however, is it an example of abasement before the shrine of antiquity. It is a very shrewd and just remark, and the important and original point was the dwarf could see a little further than the giant. That this was possible was above all due to the cathedral schools with their lack of a well-rooted tradition and their freedom from a clearly defined routine of study.

The phrase also appears in the works of the Jewish tosaphist Isaiah di Trani (c. 1180 – c. 1250):^[3]

"Should Joshua the son of Nun endorse a mistaken position, I would reject it out of hand, I do not hesitate to express my opinion, regarding such matters in accordance with the modicum of intelligence alloted to me. I was never arrogant claiming "My Wisdom served me well". Instead I applied to myself the parable of the philosophers. For I heard the following from the philosophers, The wisest of the philosophers asked: "We admit that our predecessors were wiser than we. At the same time we criticize their comments, often rejecting them and claiming that the truth rests with us. How is this possible?" The wise philosopher responded: "Who sees further a dwarf or a giant? Surely a giant for his eyes are situated at a higher level than those of the dwarf. But if the dwarf is placed on the shoulders of the giant who sees further? ... So too we are dwarfs astride the shoulders of giants. We master their wisdom and move beyond it. Due to their wisdom we grow wise and are able to say all that we say, but not because we are greater than they."

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in The Friend (1828), wrote:

"The dwarf sees farther than the giant, when he has the giant's shoulder to mount on."

Against this notion, Friedrich Nietzsche argues that a dwarf (the academic scholar) brings even the most sublime heights down to his level of understanding. In the section of Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1882) entitled "On the Vision and the Riddle", Zarathustra climbs to great heights with a dwarf on his shoulders to show him his greatest thought. Once there however, the dwarf fails to understand the profundity of the vision and Zarathustra reproaches him for "making things too easy on [him]self." If there is to be anything resembling "progress" in the history of philosophy, Nietzsche elsewhere^[specify] writes, it can only come from those rare giants among men, shouting out to one another across the annals of time.
